Protecting Your Peace

Time moves at lightning speed as we age. When we reach mid-life it sometimes feels like we can’t keep up with how fast everything is moving.
The cyclical demands of life can wear us down. Meeting deadlines, raising children, tending to relationships, maintaining a household, and much more … sounds exhausting, but it doesn’t have to be if we see it with a different set of eyes.
It seems like time is slipping away and we all want to hold onto the “present moment” because one day it will all just be a memory we hold dear.
When time feels too fast that is when we need to consciously “slow down.”
What can we do to live a slower paced life in a world that values productivity?
The truth is we don’t have to live in a box of conforming to the systems of society. We can release ourselves from the rat race and design our lives in a way that protects our time and wellness. Here’s how to discover magical moments for a slower life:
Silent Moments: Set aside 15-20 minutes each day for quiet time (i.e., nap, deep breathing, listen to the sounds in nature).
Soul Rituals: Upon waking up in the morning spend 20-30 minutes in prayer/meditation/journaling/walking in nature (stay away from scrolling through social media upon awakening — your mind/body/spirit will thank you).
Unplug: Turn off the sound notifications on your phone and get away from the habit of answering messages right away (set boundaries for responding within a window of time).
Continuous Learning: Learn something new and consider developing a new skill set (e.g., learn a new language, study a different culture, play an instrument, visit a museum, etc.). Research shows that immersing yourself in learning can sharpen mental wellness, confidence, well-being, motivation, and expands your perspective.
Detach from the To-Do-List: Keep a to-do-list but steer away from looking at it constantly throughout the day (to avoid being in robot mode). Give yourself only 5-10 minutes to glance at your list, including adding and subtracting tasks.
Freedom for Fun: Be sure to build in joyful things you like to do into your everyday routine (e.g., walking your dog, spending time by the lake, listening or dancing to music, playing an instrument, making arts/crafts, writing, driving to scope out new scenery, bowling, skating, playing games with your kids, etc.)
Embrace Spontaneity: When you do something spontaneous it ignites excitement, harmony, and pure joy. It not only reduces stress and anxiety, but it gives you a significant boost of resilience and creativity, enhancing your mental health.
Start slow. Begin by choosing one or two of the recommendations above and notice how you feel. Then build up to adding more of the other suggestions over time. You’ll want to ensure you’re practicing some of these on a consistent and regular basis to begin seeing the effects on your mind, body, and spirit.

Being mindful of slowing down and engaging in rituals that fill you up is the best gift you can give yourself. Watch the harmony come pouring in …
You’ll no longer feel bound to the constrictions of your daily work week. Because when you carve out time for “peace” in your day you release your attachment to time itself. That is when you can be present, and enjoy the unfolding of the passage of time.
Don’t let time melt away as you age. Be conscious of what brings you joy and peace. And walk that path every single day until the very end.
You are meant to live your best life.
Be well. Live at your own unique pace. And cherish the calmness within you.
